Dang. I slept through the rapture.
Although I must confess that 10 hours of uninterrupted, horizontal sleep does wonders for a fellow. I am looking forward to wandering about the Acropolis today.
I am also pleased to report that the hotel is managed by no less than four cats, who spend most of their time, like American cats, keeping throw rugs and large pieces of furniture from flying around the room.
There have been a few changes since I was last in Greece. Sadly, one is that the Agora (ancient marketplace) is now fenced and gated -- it used to be an open space like a park. A positive change is that much of the ring road around the Acropolis has been blocked off to cars, so it is much quieter and very pedestrian friendly. But much of what I remember remains: lots of sidewalk cafes, whizzing scooters, and the incredible warmth and friendliness of the Greek people. Laughter floats up and down these streets, all the time. I had forgotten what that was like.
I'll write some more tonight, and upload some more photos. Stay tuned ...
J.
